In Transit

IN TRANSIT covers the time and space between points A and B: on foot,by bike, by car, by train, by boat, by plane, by will, by chance, and by circumstance. Whether long enough to qualify as a journey or so brief that you can still see point A from point B, the passage or transition from there to here—or here to there—lends itself to some of our most memorable and curious travel experiences, reflections, and encounters.

I was on the train to La Rochelle, an old port town midway down France’s Atlantic coast, where I would spend 24 hours researching an article before going to a new year’s eve celebration in the Vendée countryside.

I shared a 4-seat section with a laid-back couple and their joyful, fidgety 3-year-old girl. I had a window seat, riding backwards.
